Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
