The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
