EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
