Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
